How Poinsettia Bowl Could Be LA Tech Homecoming

RUSTON, La. – Take a glance at the 2011 Bulldog football roster and, besides the home-grown talent that has helped Louisiana Tech to a WAC championship and berth in the Poinsettia Bowl, you’ll see quite a few players with “CA” listed as their home state.

What’s with this California connection?  What’s the draw of picking up and leaving friends and family on the West Coast for the unknown of the Deep South?  There’s no Baja-style crawfish in Downtown Ruston or fish taco stands in Railroad Park or In-N-Out Burger on Tech Drive?  How do you begin to describe the differences between where you’ve been, where you are, and how you got here?

For Californians Colby Cameron, David Gru, Taulib Ikharo and Nick Isham, the difference of two time zones and 2,000 miles is just the beginning.

“I tell people that I’m in Louisiana and they’ll say, ‘aw man, you’re way out there in the country’ or that ‘they’re all going out hunting all the time,’” said Ikharo.

“People I talk to back home think Louisiana is just ‘Swamp People,’” added Cameron.

“It was scary at first, such a change from California, but [Ruston] really grows on you,” said Gru.  “The southern hospitality is nice.”

And the food (always near and dear to college students and athletes alike)?

“I’ve never eaten so much fried chicken in my entire life,” said Gru.  “Everything is deep fried,” adds Ikharo.  “Deep fried pickles, Oreos, Twinkies…everything.”

“I like the etouffee and jambalaya,” said Isham.  “You can’t really get it like that back home.”  Cameron adds, “I never tried deer until I came out to Louisiana.  I really like it.”

For each member of this California quartet, the road to Louisiana Tech was an unconventional one.

“A Tech coach was actually out in California to look at another quarterback in the area and ended up at my school,” said Cameron.  “They liked what they saw and invited me out to Tech.  It was a good opportunity to play college football.”

“I was at home training to be a firefighter and wanted to look at new opportunities and to get a good education,” recalls Gru.  “I called Colby [Cameron] who was my best friend and who I had played football with since we were in the sixth grade, and the next thing I knew, I was on a plane to Louisiana.”

For Ikharo, the journey to Louisiana Tech came as a result of a coach’s visit to see his junior college’s quarterback.  “Coach [Tony] Franklin was out to watch our quarterback and saw me running some routes.  I guess he liked what he saw in me.”

Isham’s story mirrors that of Ikharo’s.  “Coach Franklin was scouting another player who ended up going to play at another college.  He found my tape on the Internet, talked to a few of my coaches and called me up.  I remember thinking that it was cool that the call came right around Christmas time.”

Sacrifices have certainly been made by each player.  Ikharo missed his graduation ceremony to contribute to his team’s 24-20 win over Nevada in Reno.  “I was thinking about graduation during the game.  My mom wanted me to stay in Ruston for the ceremony, but I had to tell her, ‘Mom, I have a game to go to and I’ll still get my diploma.’  Graduating was very important to me.  It was one of the goals I set for myself coming out here.”

Each player has had unique challenges in adjusting to college life in a place that is so very much different than any place they had ever lived before.

And now they are all together at Louisiana Tech, leading their team back to their home state to play in the Poinsettia Bowl…in an ESPN primetime game…as champions of the Western Athletic Conference…against a team ranked in the Top 20 in the nation.

It just goes to prove that sometimes the b-side of the record is better than the hit single.

UFL Virginia QB Greisen Joins Dallas Cowboys

Thursday, December 15, 2011 - Quarterback CHRIS GREISEN, who led the Virginia Destroyers to victory in the 2011 United Football League Championship Game, has rejoined the Dallas Cowboys.

Greisen, who also reached the 2010 UFL Championship Game as the starting quarterback for the Florida Tuskers, spent time on the Cowboys roster during the 2010 season and has signed to the NFL club's practice squad following a season-ending injury to Jon Kitna.

"It's always cool when an NFL team calls you up and says we want you to play for our team," Greisen told his hometown Green Bay Press Gazette.  "It's the highest level of football, and one of the marquee franchises in the league."

Greisen completed 61 of 87 pass attempts for 695 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in four games for the Virginia Destroyers in 2011.  In the 17-3 Championship Game victory over the Las Vegas Locos he completed 21 of 31 passes for 154 yards.

"Chris Greisen has all the qualities that are important to a team, especially leadership," said Destroyers head coach MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER.  "Chris has an instinct for the game that jumped right out at me."

Prior to signing with the Cowboys on December 27, 2010, he connected on 58 of 84 pass attempts for 664 yards, 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions for the Florida Tuskers.  Having won the starting job under center, he passed for 346 yards and rushed for two touchdowns in a 23-20 defeat to the Las Vegas Locos in the 2010 UFL Championship Game.

Greisen joins JOSH MCCOWN (Chicago Bears / Hartford Colonials 2010), RICHARD BARTEL (Arizona Cardinals / Sacramento Mountain Lions 2010), JEFF GARCIA (Houston Texans / Omaha Nighthawks 2010) and 2009 UFL Championship Game winner J.P. LOSMAN (Miami Dolphins / Las Vegas Locos 2009) among former UFL quarterbacks currently with NFL clubs.

UFL Player Update Heading Into NFL Week 15

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 - Former United Football League quarterback J.P. LOSMAN saw action for the Miami Dolphins in relief of injured starter Matt Moore in Week 14 of the NFL season and might start against the Buffalo Bills, the team that drafted him in 2004, this Sunday.

Losman completed 6 of 10 pass attempts for 60 yards, but was also sacked 4 times, including once for a safety to end the scoring in a 26-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

"I thought he did some pretty good things," said Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano.  "For his first time out there really in quite a while there's going to be some things he's going to be able to learn from.  But I was pleased with what he did when he went into the game in those circumstances."

In 2009, Losman completed 102 of 163 passes for 1,193 yards 9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in leading the Las Vegas Locos to the inaugural UFL Championship Game where he orchestrated a 20-17 overtime win from under center over the Florida Tuskers.

Losman will play under interim head coach Todd Bowles, who was appointed after Sparano was relieved of his duties this week, if he sees action against the Bills on Sunday in Buffalo.

The Bills will feature starting tackle ERIC PEARS (Omaha 2010) and guard COLIN BROWN (Hartford 2010) who both played in a 37-10 loss to the San Diego Chargers this past weekend.  Pears has signed a contract extension with the Bills after starting 13 games at right tackle in his first full season with the Bills on an offensive line that has allowed a NFL-low 17 sacks in 2011.

Chargers kicker NICK NOVAK (pictured, Florida 2010) the 2010 UFL Special Teams Player of the Year, hit a 47-yard field goal and 4 of 5 extra point attempts in his team's win.

Another former Florida Tuskers standout, defensive end ERIC MOORE, returned to the active roster of the New England Patriots in a 34-27 win over the Washington Redskins, whose kicker GRAHAM GANO made field goals from 24 and 25 yards and 3 of 3 extra points.  Long snapper NICK SUNDBERG (California 2009) and defensive end DARRION SCOTT (Florida 2010) also featured for the Redskins.

Running back LORENZO BOOKER (Hartford 2010) rushed 3 times for 17 yards as the Minnesota Vikings lost 34-28 to the Detroit Lions and included former Sacramento Mountain Lions safety ANDREW SENDEJO, who made a special teams tackle after being activated from the practice squad.

2010 UFL Defensive Player of the Year ISAIAH TRUFANT posted a special teams stop as his New York Jets won 37-10 against the Kansas City Chiefs.  There were also wins for a pair of former Hartford Colonials safeties in QUINTIN DEMPS, who had a 20-yard kickoff return as the Houston Texans outlasted the Cincinnati Bengals 20-19, and EMMANUEL COOK, who lined up for the Baltimore Ravens in a 24-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Kicker MATT BRYANT (Florida 2009) made a 34-yard field goal to trigger an Atlanta Falcons comeback from 27-3 down to eventually top the Carolina panthers 31-23 and also tagged on 4 of 4 extra points.  Fellow kicker STEVEN HAUSHKA split the uprights from 48, 42 and 23 yards and was good on 3 of 3 extra points as the Seattle Seahawks cruised past the St Louis Rams 30-13 on Monday Night Football.

Fullback TYLER CLUTTS (Sacramento 2010) started for the Chicago Bears in a 13-10 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos and defensive tackle SHAUN SMITH (Las Vegas 2009) made a tackle as the Tennessee Titans lost 22-17 to the New Orleans Saints.
